Hello everyone! I'd like to point to the title of this journal, by the way. I'm still here, just working! There's not a whole lot to write about as I'm not doing anything that spectacular. I'll try to get some pictures up soon, I guess, but really.. I scrub toilets, people. Do you really want to see that? Hah.

Hmm... Yeah. I really don't have any pictures of anything new this year. I'm open to any requests, you know. You don't have to register to post, by the way.

Hmm, hmm. Ooh! Midrats dinner!

Hello everyone! I was going to wait to post this weekend, as I get two days off in a row (!!) for Thanksgiving, but here I am anyway.

A storm is blowing through McMurdo! It's currently Condition 1 out at Pegasus and Condition 2 everywhere else. Wait. I'm not sure if you guys know what I'm talking about from last season.

Cut from the official USAP glossary:

Condition One
Weather conditions when visibility is less than 100 ft., or wind speed is greater than 55 knots (more than 60 mph), or wind chill is greater than -100°F (-38°C). [All travel is prohibited. You have to stay where you are and wait until the weather lets up or you are escorted back to some other building.]

Condition Two
Weather conditions when visibility is less than ¼ mile, or wind speed is between 48 and 55 knots (about 55 mph to 65 mph), or wind chill factor is between -75°F and -100°F (or between -24°C and -38°C). [All recreational travel is prohibited. You can go outside if you feel it is safe for you to do so.]

Condition Three
Weather conditions, from anything better than a Condition Two, up to a beautiful sunny day.

So yeah. I'm up in the Crary library at the moment, having forsaken dinner in the hopes of some lone computer access and not wanting to go out in this terrible weather more than necessary. I am hoping that it doesn't turn to Con1 while the people I work with are still over in 155, but I guess I could clean the rest of this building by myself...

It's getting a bit cold in here and the noise from the wind is pretty incredible. It sounds like there's a jet overhead and.. not going anywhere.

Hmm. 6am. Back to work!

I was all set to update this a few hours ago... I should have done it then, as I'm really exhausted now.

Work is going well. I'm on night shift now. I've recieved almost all of the packages I sent to myself (There are more in the post office!), including my spinning wheel and dulcimer, so I'm really happy. My dulcimer is in good condition, though I need to find a way to humidify it, and I fixed the piece of my wheel that broke, so now that's good too.

Yep. Ghhh. Tired. There were exciting things I wanted to talk about, but I have no idea what they are, now. Man. This 11am movie thing is going to be rough.

Ahh, yes. I remember now. My inability to update! It all comes back to me...

I've been here for a week and a half now and it feels much longer. It feels like I never left, really. There's not much to talk about, though, as I've just been working and eating and sleeping the entire time. This is why I don't update, you know, nothing interesting happens here!

I transition to night shift in two days, which will be great. Four of us will clean 155 (The main building and dorm that I live in), Crary (Where the SCIENCE happens!), Southern Exposure (The smoking bar, but it's so much better than the other one), and possibly some other places. No word yet on how we'll split everything up, but I'm looking forward to it.

Hmmm... I am full of brunch. I kind of want a nap, but I've been sleeping my days away lately. Yesterday, I planned for a short nap and ended up asleep for FOUR HOURS. Also, though I barely dreamt at all last year, I've been having really vivid freaky dreams lately. Last night's was too complicated and disturbing to bother explaining, but imagine this: All you can see in your field of vision is darkness with some very dim shades of brown. What are you looking at? What is it? You stare into it for a good five minutes until, "OH! It's a bat!"* The bat, upside-down and with wonderfully good timing, opens its eyes and mouth, hisses at you, and you sit bolt upright in bed, clutching your beeping alarm clock. Good times.

What should I write about here?

I'm here! I'm here! I'm currently on my lunch break (an entire HOUR!) and have been having a great time so far. Hooray for cleaning toilets! I can't find my wallet, but everything is a mess right now, so I'll call people soon. It's absolutely weird being back. I'll have to write an entire entry on how it feels like I've, at once, not left at all and have also now entered an alternate universe.

Whatever shall I do for the next half hour? The possibilities are endless!

Graah!! Time to play Guess What I Did Yesterday!

If you guessed "Flew to Antarctica", you're half right.

If you guessed "Landed at McMurdo", you are so so wrong.

The right answer, kiddies, is "Got to the CDC at 10pm, got on a plane at 12:30, flew ALL THE WAY to McMurdo to find poor weather conditions, and flew back to Christchurch."

Baby's first boomerang and I'm not well pleased. A ten hour flight to nowhere! I am posting from the Christchurch library because I've been moved to a hotel out in the boonies that is much less swanky than the last one and charges for internet access. I now plan to find my crankiness by wasting my new travel fund on ridiculous things like new snuggly pajamas, find some foods, bother all the people watching the debate, then take my last bath for the year.

Hooray for decent bus routes.

You can walk a hundred thousand miles and never find a home
You always knew someday you'd have to strike out on your own
You look up at the clouds and you can see which way the wind is blowing

Due South
That's the way I'm going
Due South
Saddle up my travelling shoes, I'm bound to walk away these blues
Due South

Leaving in a few hours!

Okay, ENOUGH with the really disturbing creepy crawlie dreams, already!

We're closer to the first flight getting out today. Their early morning flight was delayed until 11am, so now we wait. If they leave, my flight will try to leave tomorrow. I was originally on the third flight, but apparently they really need janos.

Ow, ow, ow. My legs! They're falling off... I was invited to go geocaching yesterday and did not quite realize that it meant five solid hours of hiking around in the New Zealand wilderness. At the end of the day a few of us admitted to expecting some light treasure hunting in between pubs. It was, however, a lot of fun and, combined with the very relaxing morning, made for the best day yet. We took the bus to the Christchurch gondola, took it to the top of Mt. Cavendish, rode through the Time Tunnel, and hiked extensively around, on, and down the mountain into Lyttelton. By this time, we'd found two caches, hopped fences, irritated some sheep, almost lost the entire IT department, and recited much of The Princess Bride. When we got to Lyttelton, my knees were going to give out and my legs were shaking from the strain, so the search for dinner was on. Lan and Mike asked around and we were led to Satchmo's, a small American Jazz themed restaurant. They had a resident cat, delicious food, and seating out back in a garden. I'll have to find it again when I get off the Ice.

Hmm. I walked away from this awhile ago. I probably had more to say, but I'll leave it at that.

More weather delays, I'm afraid. Who knows when we'll get out of here now. I should plan a trip or two out of town for the next couple of days, but I'm really quite content lounging in my hotel room. Aside from my terrifying spider dream last night (Black widows! That FLY! And shoot scary poisoned barbs!) my morning has consisted of an exceedingly comfy bed, a front row seat at an online Mornington Crescent match, good tea, and Hobnobs. The latter two I purchased yesterday at a shop Micah showed us.

Imagine a tiny store, the walking area being just about three feet all along the front counter, every surface piled up with various British teas and snacks, and the shelves on the walls going up about ten feet. The man who ran the store had a white apron on and moved his wooden ladder back and forth to collect whatever goodies someone asked for. There was hardly any room to walk in there, even with just four people. He asked me, upon purchasing some Yorkshire tea, if I was a "Yorkshire lass." I wish I could have gotten pictures, but it would have been a bit awkward.

Micah, Hally, Justin and I walked around for much of the day yesterday, running errands, fighting the wind, scaring Justin with terrible stories about McMurdo, and trying not to laugh too openly at any of the completely bizarre people who walked by us. I don't have many pictures in general, actually, from my travels so far. I'll try to keep it in mind from now on.

A bunch of us met up for Thai food last night and, after accidently leaving while Matt was in the bathroom, went to some fancy place with expensive (but delicious!) desserts. I am amazed I was able to haul myself home. It as a close thing.

I'm meeting up in half an hour to go geocaching in Lyttelton today. Here's hoping I don't get too badly sunburnt!
